BRAINTREE –The town has taken another step towards the approval of an expansion and renovation plan for the East Middle School.
School Superintendent Frank Hackett told the school committee Monday night he filed the preliminary design program for the project with the Massachusetts School Building Authority for their review. The authority is expected to pay between 50 and 58 percent of the project’s $69 million cost.
The project is part of a plan to move Grade 5 classes to the middle schools in order to free up space in the town’s elementary schools. Hackett the town has also submitted a statement of interest to the authority for a similar project at South Middle School.
He said the middle schools would likely be organized into two “academies” of Grades 5 and 6 and Grades 7 and 8.
