Contractor seeks extended hours at power plant

SALEM — The contractor building the new Salem Harbor Station is looking to expand working hours as the power plant reaches its final leg of construction.

Iberdrola Energy Projects, a contractor for Footprint Power, wants to extend working hours during the work week to midnight and add a maintenance shift on Sundays. A City Council committee will hear the request at a meeting Wednesday night.

The construction, including noise and vibrations, has been a sore spot for some living in the historic Derby Street neighborhood near the site.

In a letter to the city’s 11 City Councilors, project director Enrique Muñiz wrote that the project is hitting crunch time.

“At this stage of the project, the mechanical and electrical works are reaching their peak,” Muñiz said. “The main activities on-site are related to welding and installation of electric cables. The manpower has also reached its peak.”

As winter continues, the constant threat of inclement weather can put crews behind schedule, something Muñiz said extra shifts could help avoid.
