Dueling Natick plans to create assisted-living zoning

NATICK – Town Meeting this spring will likely weigh two different zoning proposals to foster development of assisted living on certain residential land.

Supporters of Artis Senior Living’s plan to build a 60-unit assisted living and 72-bed memory care facility on the Windy-Lo nursery site in South Natick filed one proposal while neighbors who have worried about the project filed the other measure. Memory care services are tailored to people with Alzheimer’s and similar diseases.

For a project to come to fruition, Town Meeting must vote to create the concept of an assisted living overlay zoning and to apply the rules to specific parcels such as Windy-Lo on Rte. 16. Underlying zoning would be maintained but property owners and developers could also make use of what the overlay zoning allows.

In the fall, Town Meeting sent a prior proposal put forward by supporters of the potential Artis project to the Planning Board.

Supporters met with planners and residents and have revised their proposal based upon feedback from town officials and residents, said Jim Hanrahan, an attorney working on the Artis project.
