WS Development is planning an expansion of The Street, its Chestnut Hill open-air shopping center on Route 9.

The company received Newton City Council approval last week for two infill projects that will increase the center’s retail and restaurant space by 13,100 square feet — a scaled-down version of its original expansion proposal.

WS plans to rework the northeast corner of The Street on the 55 Boylston St. block, which includes two stories with the Showcase SuperLux multiscreen cinema and retail on the second floor, and a vehicle passageway with customer parking underneath. It wants to infill the structure with an additional 8,400 square feet of space for a Legal Sea Foods restaurant with outdoor patio seating on the second floor and additional retail space on the first. Legal Sea Foods would relocate from its current spot at 43 Boylston St. in The Street, and Btone Fitness would be among the new tenants, according to WS.
