Developers are looking to put either a hotel or apartments into the 1500 block of Hancock Street.

QUINCY – A second major development is proposed in Quincy’s Hancock lot – this one either a hotel or more apartments.
The proposal, which Quincy’s city council will consider in January, is more or less a land swap, said Chris Walker, spokesman for Mayor Thomas Koch.
The result would be that LBC Partners of Boston, which owns the building at 1500 Hancock St., which wraps around the northeastern corner of the intersection of Hancock and Cottage Avenue, would be able to build at that spot a hotel with about 171 rooms, or a mixed-use building around the same number of apartments.
Whether the new seven-story building is a hotel or apartments over retail space would be up to the developers to decide, Walker said.
“That’s the question for the market at this point,” he said.
But he said the administration’s vision for Quincy Center does involve a hotel.
“We do envision a hotel being part of the downtown at some point,” he said – but that could be this project or another one down the line.
The administration hopes that increased commercial development, like it’s aiming for at the recently purchased site of the nearby former Ross garage, will create a market for a hotel, Walker said.
